Vegan Athletic Shoes 2015

2018 Survey results are now available!!! – click me to go there

A survey of 100 athletic shoe manufacturers to determine which (if any) of their products are Vegan. Companies were contacted via email, their sites contact forms and/or by facebook from June through September 2015, with the following script:

‘Hello,
I am updating a list of footwear that is suitable for Vegans.
Could you please provide me with the details of your brands footwear that will help me to include you in this list?

To be Vegan, footwear must be made without using animals in any part of the process including bonding materials and dyes.
However, the list also includes footwear that contains animal glues and footwear containing ingredients of unknown or changing origin.
I would like your company to be represented accurately, please provide a sufficient level of detail to allow this.
Please consider all shoes that are marketed under your brand name in all countries.

Thank you for your time’

After receiving the requested information, I followed with another enquiry:

‘Thank you for your reply,
Could you also please tell me where your products are made as well as your company policy regarding working conditions for all who are employed directly and indirectly by your company?

Thank you again’

The basic results are presented in the table below.
More information, including the correspondence with the companies, is viewable by clicking the company name or by heading directly to the details section.
An explanation of the categories that I have used, can be found near the bottom of the page

Please feel free to recommend any other companies that may also be suitable.

I believe it is also a very good idea to contact these companies prior to purchase. This will hopefully give you peace of mind and also lets the companies know that ethical consumers are interested in their products.
and… if you see a search bar on any website, anywhere at all on the web; please type ‘Vegan’ into it 🙂

Site has a search facility, but does not return results for ‘Vegan’.
Correspondence: “Thank you for your interest in Baffin Inc. With our winter boot line, the liners have a 4 layer liner system. One of these layers is wool. So unfortunately these will not work for you. Our rubber boot would work as the liner do not have wool. The Exception in this line is our -100C/-148F Titan boots as these have our Polar liners. Also check out our Trail to Rapids series and Marsh series. These will also work well for you”

Working conditions: “Most of our products are Canadian made, however there are certain pieces on our boots that are brought in from overseas example laces, clips, some uppers, etc. and attached here in Canada. You will not find any company in North America that manufacture polyurethane. All boots with polyurethane are manufactured overseas. This technology is a patent product, not available in Canada or U.S. In short the rubber line is manufactured here in Canada. Also manufactured in Canada are the NWT, Barrow, James Bay, Driller and Oil Rig, white horse and Yukon. These too are Industrial boots. All other products are manufactured overseas. So the Journey are made overseas. I also want to let you know that although our winter boot line is manufactured overseas we have management that over sees our production. We also have strict policies that must be followed (quality control) that insures that all persons and procedures must be met and all employees be treated properly. In Canada we have Ministry of Labor that insures all employees are treated properly. In short Baffin is truly a great place to work.”

Working conditions: “While we design, engineer, and specify every component and stitch of our high performance running gear in the U.S.A., we manufacture in factories around the world. Countries of manufacture include: Canada, China, Israel, Jordan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, U.S.A., and Vietnam. In our efforts to establish solid, long-term, and mutually beneficial relationships with business partners, we are very careful when selecting our manufacturers. We make certain each one meets our social compliance standards prior to establishing a business relationship. We visit the factory, observe its facilities, and conduct a third-party social compliance audit to approve the manufacturer prior to production of one Brooks shoe or technical garment in that facility. We also require factories to commit to not using restricted substances in the production of our gear and to sign a “Working Conditions Policy and Commitments” document in which they agree to be in compliance with the local labor laws (including age requirements, fair wages); not employ child/forced/slave labor; and provide adequate food, housing, and medical coverage to all employees. Our commitment to quality leads us to pursue business partners with the best facilities and working conditions.”

Result: Vegan company
Correspondence: “Eco-Vegan Shoes as the name indicates are vegan shoes – no animal products nor by-products have been used in production and post-production. We are confident that our shoes feature environmentally friendlier materials, from the Swiss made Schoeller fabric used on the majority of the uppers to the non animal glue used in their assembly. Wherever possible we work closely with the Vegan Society who check all our claims before giving them their approval. We only work to the highest ethical standards and only use the highest quality environmentally friendly materials such as Eco-Ortholite which replaces 20% of the petroleum traditionally used in the ployol of urethane foams with bio-oil. Even our shoeboxes are made of 99% bio-degradable material. Moreover, our motto is Comfort Technology and Beyond Leather. Our shoes are technologically advanced – we offer special, non-slip outsoles, energy gel pads in the heel area for shock absorption, moisture-wicking Eco-Ortholite insoles for extra comfort and to prevent odour. Also, Schoeller fabric used for many of our models is an advanced fabric which acts as a membrane (pinecone effect), it opens when it’s hot and closes when it’s cold –depending on the feet temperature. What is more, our shoes are either water-resistant or waterproof and that is why we have a large, devoted audience within world vegan community.”

Working conditions: “All our European products are made in factories in Portugal and Italy . They all work to European laws. All eco vegan materials are separated from other supplier raw materials according to the Vegan Society rules which EVS insists are obeyed in all production sites. We use one factory in Indonesia for the products which have to be made to EN ISO standards as they are the best factory and work to very high quality standards and are a EN ISO certified factory. It is an old family firm making for several top brands and takes extremely good care of its workers many of which have been working for over 20 years and are very skilled. No child labour is allowed and neither would it be contemplated. There is a mosque in the factory and everyone is allowed to follow their religion.”

It was brought to my attention in December by Pamela (Thank you) that the link for mens footwear supplied by Keens no longer worked. I emailed them to to enquire:

Me: ‘Hi, the link that you supplied me to mens vegan footwear does not appear to be working anymore. The search term vegan does not appear to return any mens shoes either. Has something changed?’

Keens: “The only shoe that we have at this time that is certified Vegan friendly is the Timmons Slip-on Canvas. There are other shoes that do not use leather but are not certified based off the glue. We will be having more options coming out after the first of the year as part of our spring line. If there is anything else I can do please let me know.”

Me: ‘Thank you for your reply.
Is this something that has changed dramatically this year? You provided me with different details earlier in the year.
The womens and childrens links that you sent me still work.
Searching for ‘Vegan’ on the keens site also returns more models than just the Timmons.’

Keens: “It will change based on the time of year and what we currently have in stock. Typically we have more of those options in the Spring and Summer and towards fall and winter when we sell out then we have less options. If we get extra stock back from our retailers that will also pop on and off based on inventory. As for the search when you type in Vegan it brings up everything Kids, Women’s and Men’s. The one list I sent you at the time was just for Men’s. I hope that makes sense but if you have any other questions feel free to ask.”

Me: ‘If I search your site using ‘vegan’ non-gender specific, these are the styles that are returned: Timmons, Santa cruz, Coronado, Cortona, Maderas.
Previously you stated:
“The only shoe that we have at this time that is certified Vegan friendly is the Timmons Slip-on Canvas.”
Could you please clarify which models (if any) are actually vegan?’

Keens: “You are correct if you go non-gender specific those are all vegan friendly. If you choose just Men’s then its the Timmons low lace canvas and the Santa Cruz Canvas.”

Working conditions: “CODE OF CONDUCT
At KEEN, we are committed to building strong communities and a healthier planet. We call it the KEEN Promise. Our Code of Conduct outlines standards to ensure that working conditions in our supply chain are safe, that workers are treated with respect and dignity, and that manufacturing processes are environmentally responsible. We expect that our factory suppliers (our Vendors) will share our commitment. Our Code of Conduct lays out certain minimum standards for our Vendors. We believe that these minimum standards are essential to keeping the KEEN Promise.
FOLLOW THE RULES Vendors will comply with all laws and regulations in all locations where they do business.
VOLUNTARY WORK Vendors will not use any forced or involuntary labor.
EMPLOYEES ARE AGE 16 OR OLDER Vendors will not hire a person under the age of 16. If the local legal minimum age for employment is higher than 16, then the higher age shall apply.
NO HARASSMENT OR ABUSE Vendors will treat each employee with respect and dignity, and will not subject any employee to any physical, sexual, psychological or verbal harassment or abuse.
COMPENSATION IS PAID TIMELY Vendors recognize that wages are essential to meeting employees’ basic needs. Vendors will timely pay employees at least the minimum wage required by local law or the prevailing industry wage, whichever is higher, and vendors shall provide all benefits mandated by local law. Vendors will compensate employees for overtime hours at such premium rate as is required by local law or, in those countries where such laws do not exist, at a rate at least equal to the employee’s regular hourly compensation rate.
WORKING HOURS ARE NOT EXCESSIVE Except in extraordinary business circumstances, Vendors will not require employees to work in excess of 60 hours per week (48 regular hours and 12 overtime hours), or the regular and overtime hours allowed by local law, whichever is less. Vendors shall allow employees at least one day off in every seven-day period. All overtime work shall be consensual.
NO DISCRIMINATION Vendors will hire, pay, promote, discipline and terminate employees on the basis of their ability to do the job, rather than on the basis of personal characteristics or beliefs, including gender, race, religion, age, disability, sexual orientation, marital status, pregnancy, nationality, political opinion, social or ethnic origin or any other status protected by local law.
HEALTHY AND SAFE WORKPLACE Vendors will provide a safe and healthy work environment, including written safety and health policies and procedures, and training and adequate equipment to ensure workplace safety practices. If a Vendor provides residential housing for employees, the housing must be safe and healthy.
RESPECT FREEDOM OF ASSOCIATION AND COLLECTIVE BARGAINING Vendors will respect the rights of employees to associate, organize and bargain collectively in a lawful and peaceful manner, without penalty or interference. Vendors will permit employees to discuss any job-related grievances with Vendors’ representatives without penalty or reprisal.
MINIMIZE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS Vendors will comply with all applicable environmental laws and regulations, and will strive to minimize the effects of their operations on the environment. Vendors will comply with the requirements set forth in KEEN’s Restricted Substance List policy.”

Details: “Every day people are bombarded with decisions. One of our goals is to make your choice in footwear easier, and one of the ways we do this is by making all Keep products vegan and cruelty-free. This means no animals were harmed when making our shoes. This also means that we produce all of our footwear in factories audited by international, third-party non-profits who monitor ethical working conditions. A Keep representative is on the line of every production.”
Correspondence: “All of our shoes are completely vegan. We do not use animal products or animal glues. We primarily use woven fabrics, cotton, and faux suede for our shoes. Our soles are made from rubber. Please let us know how we can assist you further. Thanks for the support.”

Working conditions: “All of our shoes are made in a factory in China that is regularly audited by an international, third-party, non-profit group called Sedex. Since we’re a small company, we don’t have the resources to conduct audits ourselves, and therefore only work with companies which are accredited and audited consistently. Furthermore, someone from Keep is on the line for every production and is intimately involved with the production process. We don’t simply outsource the production — we’re there, in person, being a part of the process.”

We do use a lot of fabrics from local markets, so I guess these are from ‘a changing origin’, but we are told from these suppliers that animal products are not used in dying the fabrics or glues. Also, a lot of our products are sold in Europe and the USA, so all the materials we use need to pass Reach, Prop 65, and CPSIA. Not all of our product is vegan friendly. We still do have some shoes that utilise the long lasting and durable properties of leather, however we are working more towards the whole range becoming vegan friendly in the future as synthetic leathers become better.”

Working conditions: “Currently, all of our products are manufactured overseas in China. I have personally visited our manufacturer’s location and I can attest that the working conditions that the employees experience daily meets standards set by our company and a majority of the industry. If you ask about children in the workforce, that is obviously out of the question. The employees receive numerous opportunities for breaks, vacations, and ample sick days. Also, their wages are well above other factories that we researched in that particular area. As far as the employees here in the office (there is only four of us) we all grew up as chums, so besides some pranks and smart ass remarks here and there, we are good. Hopefully this helps.”

Description of definitions used
Result Description
Vegan company The company is Vegan, there should never be any need to doubt any of their products. These companies should be an ethical consumers first choice for our own peace of mind.
All Vegan The company has stated by correspondence that all of their footwear products are Vegan. However, they do not appear to identify themselves as a Vegan company, so there is a possibility that future products will not be ethical.
Vegan options The company provides styles that are completely Vegan, but not all of their styles are Vegan.
Synthetic options, bonding agents and dyes may be of animal origin The company provides styles that are free from animal derived ingredients, excepting (perhaps) the bonding agents and/or dyes etc. This is the one that I find most annoying, basically the company does not know (or is unwilling to back itself regarding) the type of bonding agents and/or dyes etc that are used at all times. They may vary due to season/availability/price etc. To me this is both an ethical and quality control issue. Shoe manufacturers generally market themselves as high tech and very deliberate in their materials and design. The suggestion that they are unaware of their own ingredients and/or processes, brings the companies and the industry itself into question. Footwear purchased from these manufacturers, may or may not be Vegan.
Synthetic options, bonding agents and/or dyes are of animal origin The company provides styles that are free from animal derived ingredients, excepting the bonding agents and/or dyes etc, which they state are derived from animals. I have no idea why a company would choose to still do this in 2015.
No Vegan options The company deliberately chooses to provide no ethical footwear.
awaiting reply Not enough time has passed since I made initial contact with the company, or they have responded that they are collecting the required details so that they can respond appropriately.
No reply The company has been contacted at least 3 times over an extended period, using a variety of methods (email, contact form, facebook etc) but No reply has been received from them.
Uncooperative The company has been contacted at least 3 times over an extended period, using a variety of methods (email, contact form, facebook etc) but is only willing to provide vague details or none at all. Companies in this category tend to ask why they are being questioned, by who and for what purpose. But even after responding to their questions, they continue to be Uncooperative. Thankfully these companies are rare, the majority of companies in this survey have provided very good customer service. Only a handful of the companies surveyed make me want to look at Barnivore

    • Agreed, it is an issue with the way that I do the survey. It is totally dependent upon decent, consistent and accurate customer service. This appears to be a common failing for many companies; answers vary, can be vague, the process can drag on for months… while other companies are both willing and able to answer both questions very well within a day or 2.
I pose the question to the companies to make sure that they do understand what Vegan means and that they do include adhesives/glues, dyes etc. I am probably too specific in this respect, but I try to be consistent.

  2. I actually tweeted Nike recently and got these replies

TWEET 1: Look for synthetic leather or mesh in the shoe product description, Chris. We cant guarantee that a specific shoe is 100% vegan.

TWEET 2: Try taking a look at these running shoes, Chris: gonike.me/6012BzTQI gonike.me/6014BzTQ0

  3. facebook page posting comes in very handy at times 😉 it will be good to see their response to you! I am always concerned about the responses from individual customer service representatives varying/not being inline with actual company practices etc. Ideally the companies will all get sick of being questioned and will post in depth details on their websites so that we do not have to rely on customer service representatives.

    • Just a note: the link from Keen to the vegan men’s shoes on their website shows mostly non-vegan shoes; the women’s and children’s links seem fine (just a couple of styles). Type vegan into their search for better results.

  7. Today I emailed Under Armour to find out which of their running shoes are vegan. This was their response:
“Unfortunately at this time we do not manufacture vegan running shoes. We appreciate you taking the time to provide us with feedback about the possibility of this shoe and have since forwarded your response to our footwear development team for review”.

    • The joys of customer service 😉 A constant headache for me with this survey as well as other company contact re: veganism.
Clearly a different reply to the one that they gave me, it always pays to check the labels (only partially helpful with shoes unfortunately) and to contact the manufacturer if purchasing shoes from a non-vegan brand.
It will be interesting what info Under Armour supplies me with this year if I continue the survey.
      Always proceed with caution.

    • CSR’s are a pain in the butt, consistency is a major issue when it comes to collecting data. I am well aware that others have contacted companies that I have contacted and received different responses, or received a response when I have received none. It is both annoying and concerning as it makes it difficult to have any faith in the companies.
I try to contact head office/global as much as possible; I believe they are much more likely to provide good service and actually have access to the facts.
I live in Australia so I at times I am forced via redirections to interact with the Australian offices or distributors.

Always good to see people contacting these companies. Demand needs to create supply if we want the world to change.

      • Yes. Also where possible I always try and buy from 100% vegan businesses first and foremost.

New Balance had the same reply as ASICS, although I also emailed ASICS who did mention their soon to be released vegan suitable Tiger 81. As far as I can see Nike can only be contacted by phone :(.

In the end I went with Merrell ‘MEN’S BARE ACCESS 4’ got them for $99.95 + $10 freight. I like that Merrell Australia have vegan searchable on their website and “Vegan friendly footwear” included in the product description! Too easy. I also like that they have a free postage returns for incorrect size (I actually think this should be a minimum standard for on-line shoe sellers). The shoes are great, I’m very happy with them.

  9. Thank you for this site!! I HATE shopping for shoes. I have purchased a couple pairs of Sauconys & they fall apart far too soon ( & the company blames me & says I’m dragging the toes). I just ordered a pair of trail shoes from Topo & cannot wait to receive them! Thanks for all of your research, what a time saver & I’m so excited to order from a Vegan company.

  12. Thank you so much for this! I’m relieved that I’m going to be able to continue to buy my favourite brand of running shoe (Brooks). It’s important to me that by running, I don’t support cruelty.

  13. I talked with Someone at Under Armour today. She said none of UA’s shoes are vegan. Additionally, a check of the shoes Asics claims above to be vegan reveals they often have suede.

    • Perhaps you can send the link through to whoever you spoke with at UA and query them about it? I have included a direct quote from UA
      https://vegan8.me/vegan-athletic-shoes/vegan-athletic-shoes-2015/#underarmour
Different customer service representatives can give different answers unfortunately. I am hoping in time that the companies will all label their products/sites and provide real information on their sites (FAQ etc)

Asics list the season/year of the shoe in question. It is now quite some time since they provided that list; the shoes that they list on the website are potentially different. It always pays to check prior to purchase.

  14. Bullshit ALERT, BEWARE!

Feelmax shoes are ALL probably LEATHER

“Correspondence: “Our vegan models are: Niesa 3, Panka 2, Uura, Osma 3 and Osma 4””

lookup: http://feelmax.fi/shoes/panka-2/ says clearly “Materials: Leather and Coolspacer” also the other listed shoes’ material Velukid seems to be made of animal skin too.

    • Thank you for your oh so lovely comment.
I contacted feelmax after reading it and received this response within 1 day:
“There is an error in description: The Panka 2 is vegan (the previous version – Panka – was made of leather). We will correct it”

  15. Great website!! I’m looking for new sneakers and have gone to New Balance before and utilized their search engine. However, today I typed in ‘vegan’, and got “We’re sorry, we couldn’t find any results for “vegan”. ” Also, you mention their website has a ‘Vegan FAQ’, but when I click on the link I get “Server not found”. Maybe they are working on something? Anyway, I’m disappointed and thought I’d post my findings here. I hope it’s temporary. Thanks for all the great info!!

  16. Hi, I am looking for weightlifting shoes. I contacted Nike in their chat about their Romaleos2 and the representative said those are vegan. Have the conversation emailed to me if you’d like to check it out. Other places on the net say the use plastic covered leather (PU), but Nike say it is synthetic leather. Do you think I could trust their answer? I am torn between these and the Inov8 fastlift.. Thanks 🙂
Btw, I have a new vegan fitness blog if you’re interested to check it out 😉

    • Hi again, apparently the rep who I consulted on the chat wasn’t right. I emailed Nike’s customer service and this was their answer (took aprox 24 hours to get the reply, guess they’ve improved their customer service):
“Thank you for your email, I would be more than happy to look into this!
I have discussed this with my senior team, they advised that the shoe is comprised of synthetic materials, however we cannot 100% that the product is suitable for vegans. I do apologise, rest assured I have captured feedback from this issue and forwarded it on to the relevant department for review.
If you you have any further questions or queries, please feel free to get back to me!”
Now, if this particular shoe is made of synthetic materials, but they cannot assure that it is vegan, I assume it means that either the dye or the glue they use may not be vegan which means they use those in the rest of their shoes.
I really hope more and more vegans approach those big companies like Nike so that they see how many customers they are losing and maybe will make a change eventually.
      Cheers,
      Mary.

      • One of the most annoying issues, is the lack of knowledge/interest/honesty that the customer service representatives have. It is far too easy to get different responses to the same question.
More vegans need to ask for vegan products, that encourages companies to supply more products and also leads them to supplying the correct information on their websites.
My experience with contacting the larger companies has pushed me further away from them.

        • I sent them an email hoping they will understand one day what a big audience they could get by going cruelty free. As for myself I prefer to support smaller and already cruelty free brands even if they’re not AS good (smaller brands have less money to invest in research and such) and I hope the time will come and cruelty free brands are a lot more common and better quality. I am planning to get the Inov8 shoes for myself and reviewing them, while providing a feedback for the company also. Hope it will make some difference.

Is there going to be an update for this year (2016)?

    Thanks!

    • Thank you, I am hoping to conduct the survey again in 2017
Always keen to hear of more companies offering ethical footwear!
I will look into Capezio and Carrimor.

  19. Anyone know of any vegan shoes for tennis? I can’t seem to find any shoes that are considered tennis shoes. My search always direct me to athletic shoes in general and I can’t find tennis specific vegan shoes.

  20. This is by far the most complete resource I’ve seen on vegan athletic shoes. Thanks for putting this together; there are so many more options than I had previously imagined.
